Gibbons Repeats

Chris Gibbons fended off three-time Senior Masters titlist Rick Erce 209-204 in the title match of the Senior Masters as Lake Ripley Lanes.

This year, the tournament was on Sunday, November 11. 13 bowlers participated.

Scoring was moderate with the field averaging about 208.9 for qualifying. The cut to cash and make the stepladders was volatile with a small field, at +22, +21, +75, +53, +96, and ultimately +116.

There were no honor scores on the day. Near misses included a 278 from Rick Erce and a tournament high 279 by Dan Seppa.

Chris Gibbons set the pace in game one with a 247, followed by Herb Kimpel (243), Dan Lockman (236), and Jeff Prein (222).

Kimpel vaulted to the lead with a 267 second game (510), and Rick Erce moved into second with his 278 (483). With those big games, Gibbons fell to third despite a fine 232 (479). Kevin Thompson was fourth at 421.

The top three remained the same after the third qualifying game, Kimpel leading at 735, Erce next at 718, and Gibbons third at 693. Dan Seppa moved to fourth at 675 following a 279 game.

After four games these four were still the top, although Gibbons took the lead with a 235 game to move to 928. None of the rest managed a 200 fourth game. Kimpel was close behind second at 925, Erce third at 897, and Seppa fourth at 853.

Kimpel regained the lead with a 236 game five effort to post 1161. Erce moved up to second with a 229/1126, and Gibbons fell to third at 1122 following a 194. Marc McDowell jumped into the top four with a 268 game 5, sitting at 1096.

A final game push of 242 by Rick Erce gave him the top bracket seed with a 1368 total. Kimpel was edged out by just seven pins after he shot 200 in the sixth and posted 1361. Gibbons was also within a mark of the lead, or so, following his 235 final game and 1357 total. Dan Seppa came up big a second time on the day with a 258 last that would give him the fourth bracket seed on a total of 1316.
