Open Championships – Weekend 1

A dozen teams and 16 sets of minor events pairings participated on opening day of the 2019 Open Championships this past Sunday – quite a bit for a first weekend. So far, 84 teams have already entered. The last squad of the tournament is already full and others are filling quickly so if you are looking to enter – don’t delay.

M&J Truck and Auto 2 set the team pace for the tournament so far, bowling 265 pins over average in their team event. The whole team was over average. Mark Newkirk had the high set of 716 which was +59. Jeff Sweeney went +78 on a 669. Tom Michel was highest over at +85 AND he brought cookies. Brian Wilk added 40 and Chris Loret chipped in 33.

In Division 1, Birrenkott Surveying 2 is the early leader at +153 on the high scratch score of the tournament so far, a 3336. Earl Chandler smashed a +83 722 series. Bill Borchers also had a 700, a 703 to go +40. Dan Ripp was +74 and Chris Smith was about right on average. Mike Stabenaw, who authored a 300 game in the Madison Area Masters the previous day, was … the fifth bowler.

Only one Scratch Division team bowled this weekend. Really Motivated shot 3087.

In Doubles play, the father/son duo of Jeremy Porter and Kody Porter were +112 and lead Division 1. Jeremy had 739 for +70 and Kody 678 for +42. Brian Hoffman and Ken Duffield are in second at +109 after shooting a tournament high 1471 scratch.

In Division 2, Paul Pickar and Darin Johnson teamed up for a +48 set. Pickar nearly shot 600 on his 179 average to carry the team. He was +59. You do the math.

There were no Scratch Doubles teams this weekend.

Kody Porter continued his great bowling in singles, and leads Division 1 at +28 after a 664 set.

Cory Kaschub bowled all nine games on Sunday, shooting 233 pins over average to take the early lead in All Events Division 1. He also leads Division 2 Singles after shooting a +106 667 series. He had 551 in Doubles, and 698 in the team events.

Brian Hoffman was the star of the day, smashing the first honor score of the tournament, an 800 series in Singles. He also got his whole tournament in on Sunday, and currently leads the Singles Scratch Division and both Scratch All Events (2237), and Handicapped All Events (+194).
