The 42nd annual MBA Hall of Fame and Bowler Recognition dinner will be August 15 at Sheraton, Madison. In addition to the Hall of Fame induction of Tom Howery, the event event will honor MBA member bowlers for on the lanes achievements in the 2012-2013 season. Mike Hoffman, Dave Massey, Gregg Williams, Rick Thomas, and Steve Kinning will all be recognized.
This year’s Jim Grady Memorial Bowler of the Year is Mike Hoffman. Hoffman was tournament dominant in the 2012-13 season. He won a second consecutive City Tournament Team title, anchoring the effort with a 740 series. He led qualifying in the MBA Masters with a 246 average, ultimately finishing second. In Madison Area Scratch Tour competition, Hoffman won a record five of 12 events, won the points title, and led the tour with a 228 average. At Nationals, he shot 673 in team event to help his team to a top 50 finish. Hoffman rolled a 299 in the Henry Hitter. In league play, he averaged 213 on the challenging conditions of the Bullseye Masters League and booked a 245 average in standard league play.
The Dan Mack Memorial Senior Bowler of the Year Award for 2012-2013 goes to MBA Hall of Famer Dave Massey. Massey placed in the top five in three City Tournament events; second in Team, fourth in Singles, and fourth in All Events. He was on the Senior City Tournament championship team and came in eighth place in the MBA Senior Masters. At the Wisconsin State Senior tournament, he placed fifth in Doubles and third in Singles, and ninth in All Events. He rolled one 300 game and had 11 in a row in league competition, booking a high average of 229.
Gregg Williams recorded the High Composite Average Award this season, with 235. To earn the High Composite Average Award, the average must be from two or more leagues, with 66 or more games bowled in each, and the leagues must be in two or more different bowling centers. Williams compiled the average in three leagues, averaging 236 over 74 games in the Sun Prairie Classic League, 236 over 81 games in the Tuesday All Star Scratch League at Dream Lanes, and 232 over 81 games in the Suburban Merchants League at Dream Lanes.
The High Individual Average Award goes to Rick Thomas for the third consecutive year, which included the record-setting average of 252 he sat last year. This season, Thomas averaged 242.64 in the Lions League at Middleton Sport Bowl, edging out perennial high-scorer Jim Fosdick who averaged 242.00 in the Tuesday All Star Scratch League at Dream Lanes.
Steve Kinning will be awarded the High Individual Series Award, recognizing him for rolling the highest series in the Madison USBC Bowling Association – an 846 in the Monday Major League at Prairie Lanes. Kinning chained together games of 288, 279, and 279 on December 17.
