Howery Elected to Hall

The arduous process of MBA Hall of Fame election proved especially so this year as just one nominee earned the nod from voters. Tom Howery will be honored at the 42nd annual MBA Hall of Fame and Bowler Recognition Dinner on August 15, 2103 at the Sheraton Madison. Tickets will be available in mid-July.

Howery will be inducted in the Distinguished Performance category. His competitive resume includes four MBA Championship (City) tournament titles; an All Events crown in the 1989-90 season, and three team titles in 1994-95, 2003-04, and 2004-05. Recently, he was on the 2012 Division 1 Championship team.

Howery led the city with a 230 average in the 1996-97 season. His 30 year MBA career average is 210 with a high of 235 in the 1997-98 season. He has rolled 15 perfect games, 11-in-a-row thirteen times, and has two 800 series with a high of 810.

The most prominent accomplishment in Howery’s career is the 1991 USBC Nationals All Events tile with a score of 2216. He has a solid track record at the National tournament which includes a third place team finish in 2000, top 50 doubles efforts in 1991 and 1999, and two additional top 50 team finishes in 1991 and 1997. His 27 year average is around 202, with eight all-events totals over 1900, six series of 700 or higher, and a 298 game in doubles in 1998.

No Meritorious Service nominees made it to the final ballot, though long-time MBA Director/Treasurer John Bisco and proprietor Don Bussan again advanced to the final committee. Both received enough support to remain eligible for future consideration.

In the Veterans category, 1960’s youth standout Mike Kelly made the final ballot along with 55 year MBA member Duwayne “Doc” Tietz. Though both received significant support, neither garnered the required 70% of the necessary votes. This was the second straight year on the final ballot for Kelly, the fourth for Tietz.

Other nominees in the running include Doug Leikness in the Distinguished Performance category, Bob Frambs and Dennis Breunig in the Meritorious Service catgory, and Rod Haak, Al Sundby, Dave Eaton, Dave Allen, and Bill Rabuck (deceased) in the Veterans category.

Nominations may be submitted by interested parties, in writing, to the office of the MBA and must be received before April 15th for consideration in the current year.
