Paul Hellenbrand, bowling for Kalscheur Septic out of Waunakee, threw the high individual series of the tournament so far with a 787 set on games of 253, 277, and 257. His series was in the Singles event on Squad 4 on Sunday afternoon. Teammates described the 202 average Hellenbrand with “when he’s locked in … he’s LOCKED in”. And it showed practically every shot of the set.
The Kalscheur Septic team from Waunakee bowled all nine games this Sunday, and had a banner day. They currently lead Division Two at +172 pins over average. Hellenbrand leads Division 1 Singles at +181 and Division 1 All Events at +232. Gary Anderson of that team and sixth man Bruce Otto are in the top spot in Division 2 Doubles at +102.
Perennial “whatever tournament he’s in” favorite and two-time defending Masters Titlist Derek Eoff leads the Singles Scratch Division with 783. He chained games of 257, 270, and 256.
In Division 1 Doubles, MBA Hall of Famer Greg “Rhino” Stauffacher and Lauren Sammel paired up for a +132 over average effort on the strength of Sammel’s 733 series. The Rhino contributed 689. Bill Borchers and Dale Chlebowski have the top scratch score with 1438.
M&J Truck and Auto, captained by Brian Wilk, rolled a +144 set and are currently leading Division 1 Team. Team sponsor Matt Maly led the charge with a 735 series. The Pizza Pit team, captained by Dennis Grossman, has set the mark for scratch teams with a 3471 and are currently leading the Budweiser League Challenge at +186. Grossman had 706, Borchers 740, and Mike Gannon 738.
Zimmerman Rolls 297, Ritchie 290
Mitch Zimmerman fired a 297 game as part of a 755 series in his Singles event, and currently leads Division 2 at +158, and Division 2 All Events at +270.
The only other honor count so far went to Brent Ritchie with a 290 opening game in his team event – on the opening squad of the tournament. Brent had a 773 series and will be looking to catch the current All Events Scratch leader Bill Borchers who has 2,167 in the books.
Both of these bowlers will earn an MBA Challenge Coin for having 11-in-a-row in the City Tournament.
