Scores continued to defy gravity over the second weekend of the MBA City Tournament. The USBC White 2 Pattern, designed to be fair but score “moderating” is yielding some high marks, including a couple of personal bests.
Joe ‘Porkchop’ Johnson led his Applesauces in an incredible 454 pin over average Division 1 Team effort on the Saturday 12:30 squad with a personal high 762 set, including a 299 first game. Brian Hoffman, a talented player whose skills are not diminishing, followed with 759. Jerod ‘Mr City Tournament’ Kieler chipped in 735. Zach Amundson shot 644 and Joe Sirianni 626.
Their score was the high scratch team effort, for the time being, until Alex Shekey’s ‘4 Scratch 1 Handicap’ crew from Middleton Sport Bowl took over the lead for the team title and Scratch Division with 3544. Bob Richardson fired a 747, Rick Thomas 724, and Shekey 723. MBA Hall of Famer Jeff Barsness had 680, and Kevin Thomas 670.
In Division 2 Team, Merchants #3 claimed the top spot at +234. They also currently lead the Budweiser League Challenge. Al Felt (543) led the charge with a +132 set. Darcy Hauge was next at +38. Toby Carlson +26, Roger Frank +23, and Michael Lynch +15 rounded out the scores.
In doubles, there was no change in Division 1 as Greg Stauffacher and Lauren Sammel continue to lead at +132. Same story for Division two where Gary Anderson and Bruce Otto are on top at +102. 1501 is the new lead in Scratch Doubles, shot by MBA Hall of Famer Eric Pederson (770) and partner Jay Heinzelman (731). They pair are familiar with the top spot, having earned a title in the 2008-09 tournament with 1516. The duo started slow with 427, but then went lights out on games of 517 and 557.
John Burr rolled his first career 700 series at just the right time, posting a +177 effort in Division 2 Singles with a 756. Paul Hellenbrand maintains his seemingly insurmountable lead in Division 1 Singles of +181, and the Singles Scratch Title with 787. Derek Eoff continues to lead the Scratch Division with 783.
In All Events, the scratch leader in the clubhouse is Brent Ritchie with 2,207. Ritchie compiled series of 773 (team), 694 (doubles), and 740 (singles). Paul Hellenbrand holds the All Events Division 1 top spot at +232, despite game efforts by Jerod Kieler (+224) and Ken Chavez (+211). Joe Johnson added a 659 (doubles) and 591 (singles) to his 762 team set to take the lead in All Events Division 2 with 2,129 (+329).
The high series for the tournament was shot by Matt Ruhland of the Over 60 Plus Matt team. He fired a supernational 810 series on games of 277, 254, and 279. Matt earns the first MBA City Tournament 800 Series Challenge Coin.
Despite the high scoring, there have been no perfect games, but eight bowlers have had 11-in-a-row, and will earn an MBA Challenge Coin for the accomplishment.
