The Madison USBC Bowling Association annual Jim Grady Memorial Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement (Bowler of the Year) and Dan Mack Memorial Award (Senior Bowler of the Year) information is available for review.
The Bowler of the Year point standings are updated approximately every two weeks here: (Grady) (Mack)
The standings are used to determine candidates for Bowler of the Year, Senior Bowler of the Year, First and Second All-City Teams, and the Senior All-City Team. The top 50 point leaders (top 35 senior) are reviewed by committee to determine the ultimate honorees.
Additional factors (that do not earn points) considered by the committee include performance in the Madison Area Scratch Tour, Wisconsin State Tournament, Wisconsin State Senior Tournament, and USBC Open Championships.
The committee also considers the MBA Senior City Tournament and MBA Senior Masters for the Dan Mack award, although there are no points assigned to these events. The addition of points for these events would skew seniors higher on the regular points list in the tracking system.
The point system used to determine these eligible finalists has been upgraded and can be seen here.
The baseline is honor scores. An 800 series earns 800 points, a 300 game earns 300 points, and 11 in a row earns 200. New classes of bonus points have been added to award high score performances on conditions other than “house” shots”. Honor scores bowled in leagues on USBC White, Blue, or (certified) Sport conditions earn bonuses. Honor scores bowled in the City Tournament and Masters also earn bonuses.
Most importantly, greater emphasis (more points) is now placed on top performances in the City Tournament and Masters.
The Masters tournament offers 3000 points for first place (previously 600), and awards points to the top 10 finishers (previously five). Points have been increased across the board and extended for the City Tournament. The top five teams (previously 2), top 10 doubles (5), and top 25 singles and all-events (25) earn points.
The goal of the new point system is to better reward top performances in association events and to encourage competition on more competitive lane conditions – providing a truer slate of the top bowlers on or near the top of the points list.
